List Your Business / ADTourism minister R Rajendran, Salem district collector R Brinda Devi, officials from the fisheries department released two lakh baby fish into the river Cauvery in Mettur on Saturday. The minister told reporters that the local fishing community would benefit from harvesting these fish in a few months. He said that the fisheries department was actively working to enhance fish production in the state. The department has produced three million fish, worth Rs 81 lakh, in the state, he remarked. The minister said larger fish threatened the baby fish's survival. "This is why we collect fish eggs from the rivers and hatch them in a protected environment within the same river," he said. Baby fish would be released once they reach a size of 80mm to 100mm long. Salem MP T M Selvaganapathy, Mettur MLA S Sadhasivam and others were present.
