The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has prepared a detailed feasibility report (DFR) for introducing Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) lines in Tiruchirapalli, Salem and Tirunelveli districts. CMRL director MA Siddique handed over the report to the Additional Chief Secretary, Special initiatives, Ramesh Chand Meena at CMRL headquarters on Thursday. As per the report, the CMRL envisages a two-corridor MRTS network for 45 km in Tiruchirapalli, 35.19 km in Salem and a three-corridor network for 39.07 km in Tirunelveli. It was noted that the total number of stations for each route is yet to be finalised. In Tiruchirapalli, corridor-1 is proposed to be built for a stretch of 19 km with 19 stations from Samayapuram to Vayaloor and corridor two to be built for 26 km with 26 stations from Thuvakudi to Panjapur. Similarly, one corridor in Salem is suggested to stretch for 17.16 km with 19 stations starting from Karapuranathar temple to Ayodhyapattanam railway station via Ammapet. Corridor two will be from Karuppur to Nallikalapatty via Salem Railway Junction for about 18.03 km with 19 stations. For Tirunelveli, the report has proposed three corridors with corridor-1 running for about 12.39 km from Pettai to Sankanapuram with 13 stations. Corridor-2 is suggested for 12.03 km from Palayamkottai to Ponnakudi with 12 stations and corridor-3 will be from Sankarnagar to Vasanthnagar with 15 stations for about 14.65 km. Meanwhile, the CMRL announced Friday that a total of 82.53 lakh passengers travelled in the Chennai metro in July this year followed by 85.89 lakh in August.
